A form of Micro-O formed an interesting ‘sting in the tail’ for competitors at the recent CLOK/NE Juniors colour coded event held at Hutton Lowcross Woods on 25 September 2005.
The final 140m of the courses for Light Green, Green, Blue and Brown competitors involved criss-crossing a technically intricate wooded shale tip, visiting 10 controls in the process. The area, called The Mound, incorporated many contour, rock, vegetation and man-made features found on ‘full size’ courses, such as knolls, depressions, re-entrants, crags, cairns, thickets, paths and even a chair!
The map of the area was at a scale of 1:250 (the maximum that would fit on an A4 sheet), and was given to competitors at the start, back-to-back with the rest of the course on a normal 1:10,000 O-map, with a link control, common to both maps, to prompt the flip-over.
Enthusiastic participants included 2005 World Championships Sprint Bronze medallist Heather Monro and her partner Dickie Jones, who, having started the Brown course 4 minutes apart, arrived at The Mound virtually together. Although Dickie was fastest overall on the Brown, Heather ‘won’ the Micro-O 1.55 mins to 2 mins!
The Micro-O part of the event was devised, mapped, planned and ‘gardened’ by Start Squad member Jenny Thornton and her dad Paul.
