Today, Saturday 31st January, the first round of the Future Champions Cup was held on Bagshot Heath by Southern Navigators.

For the boys it was 5km, and the girls had 3.5km.

Oleg described his first victory of the season as ‘A classic first race of the season. It was a good course but tricky in places.’ Mark agreed, saying it was ‘easy’ but he lost two minutes searching for a depression, allowing Graham to catch him up. He claims Graham then followed him round the rest of the course, Graham was unavailable for comment.

Rhodri Buffet made a strong junior debut after only recently arriving home from a ski-o trip in Finland. However the M18 class was weakened by the absence of two of last years star performers. Ed Kelleher had other commitments and was unable to make it, while 2003 champion Scott Fraser was felled by a virus in the days leading up to the race and could only walk round.

Another strong performance came from Kirsten Strain who is bouncing back from being released from the START squad a year ago. She has been motivated by Mhairi while training in Edinburgh and used her new found fitness to good effect in the race. She said ‘I caught Lizzie (Adams) at number three and she kept me running while I kept her going in the right direction. I got the balance between running and navigation just right, it felt good. Bring on tomorrow!’
